Background/Problems of the project
CBT is not a simply another kind of tourism business aimed at maximizing profits. Instead, CBT creates opportunities for both visitors and host communities to interact in meaningful ways. A focus on learning and cultural exchange fosters mutual respect and builds lasting relationships among civil society groups. By stimulating demand for local products and services, CBT creates new livelihood opportunities. Increased income leads to an improved quality of life and allows communities to invest in activities aimed at environmental sustainability. Active participation of local people in designing and managing CBT promotes community empowerment and builds community capacity. In particular, REST encourages women and youth to play a leading role.
Objectives/Significance of the project
*Empower local communities to promote their cultures, ways of life, traditional wisdom and relationships with the environment; and support existing local capacity in managing protected natural areas (marine, watershed and forestry).
*Facilitate sustainable development and improved quality of life in participating communities through providing an opportunity to aquire new skills; strengthen the community's organizational and mangement capacity; increase environmental awareness and promote the balance and sharing of gender roles.
*Raise public awareness of the communities lifestyles, relationships with the natural world, and grass-roots conservation efforts and achievements, in order to engender increased cross-cultural respect and an active commitment to environmental protection and natural resource conservation.
Description of the project
REST is a non-governmental organization that works with communities throughout Thailand, helping grassroots groups develop and manage alternative community based tourism (CBT) programs. CBT fosters community empowerment and builds community capacity by creating sustainable, environmentally responsible livelihoods opportunities for grassroots groups.

Time span/Timeline
It is an ongoing project.
Result/Self evaluation (success or failure) including its reasons
The result of the CBT project in Thailand is until now quite successful. Local communities are learning to manage tourism by themselves. Show and educate public and authorities about their way of life and about the natural resources. The communities are happy and proud to show guests from all over the world their way of living. While the communities develop more communication skills. Guests learn a lot about them and change their attitudes and thoughts towards the local people and the environment. We accomplished already that several GO's and NGOユs learned about CBT. REST have done study trips for Indo-China tourism board, Nepal tourism board.
Other learning from the project
*Implementing and evaluation is necessary.
*Co-management with stake holders is difficult but necessary.
