Kampung Engkarang and Terongin located in Sintang District surrounded by coarse grasses field. At least 100.000 ha are covered by coarse grasses, which cause fire in plantation, agriculture and forest fields every year. People lost their natural resources and suffered by smoke.

Government and private company had tried to rehabilitate the land, but it wasn't effective because people weren't involved in planning until action. It is important for people to get involved to overcome those problems.

Objectives/Significance of the project

Program purpose is to empower people in all aspects: economics, social, culture and environment. Program is focused to assist people to raise their confidence that they can solve their own problems.

Result/Self evaluation (success or failure) including its reasons

Generally, the program is successful. There are some reasons:
*We can build trust relationship with participants involved in this program.
*After three years program (2002-2004), people have become confidence. Through CU, people can help themselves without begging to the outsiders.
*People plant the fields and their home yards with local plants having economic values. Through land rehabilitation and organic farming activities, their skill in agriculture is increased.
*CU asset is up to Rp. 1 million with 1000 members in a year. They are from 30 Kampung (sub villages).

Other learning from the project

People's self-confidence is a key to succeed the program. In the beginning people could not accept us. They though us as a big company giving money. Before we came, they used to be given money or jobs from the government or private company. But, after passing a long dialogue with them, they realized that people who can wait for other's help. They should help them selves.
