- Target area and people
- Schools with very poor environment and has no budget of their own to develop. Mostly community based schools are being focused.
- Background/Problems of the project
- Due to mountain terrain and poor landscaping practices in the schools, most of the schools were in very bad conditions and are not al all friendly for children. Dust during dry seasons and heavy mud during rainy seasons were some of the intolerable scenes in some of these schools. Some greening programmes would help minimize these problems and create the school environment into children friendly and learning environment.
- Objectives/Significance of the project
- To create a healthy environment in the school so that children will love coming to school to learn.
- Description of the project
- Considering the problems mentioned in table no 8, the Ministry of Education felt the need to improve the living environment of the schools. Plantation, grass growing and converting some areas into concrete are some of the activities under this programme.
- Materials/equipments used in the project:
- As required
- Pictures and maps
- Time span/Timeline
- Each school was given one year time for implementing the programme. Since 1998 to 2003, ten schools had completed and showed good results.
- Result/Self evaluation (success or failure) including its reasons
-
The school greening programme was a very successful programme and schools were happy with what they had done.
Some other nearby schools tries to replicate some of the activities on their own. Some school had approached the Ministry requesting for similar programmes but due to fund constraints, were not able to support.
- Other learning from the project
- Seeing lots of physical developments in the school converting the unwanted areas into useful and beautiful places, had encouraged many schools around and tries to replicate in their own school by their own initiatives
