- Objective:
TEAN strives to increase Taiwan's involvement in international efforts on diverse environmental issues that concern all people. - Plans for the next 5 years
-
Our major goals center upon Taiwan lowering its CO2 emission reductions as well as adopting measures to regulate toxic waste. Our plan focuses upon facilitating cooperative exchanges between governments and NGOs (for example the Kaohsiung City-Vancouver partnership on CO2 emissions was brokered by TEAN). In addition we are looking to expand our partnerships with foreign environmental NGO to increase Taiwan's role in addressing international environmental issues such as climate change and sustainable practices in the high-tech industry.
- Self Evaluation
TEAN's Climate Change campaign focuses on providing consultation for government, as well as placing international and domestic pressure for government action. On November 4, 2006 TEAN led a coalition of more than 13 local environmental groups in staging the Climate Change, Taiwan Cares! Parade as part of a larger global action against climate change held in conunction with more than 45 other countries. In addition TEAN is spearheading a number of projects such as the Kaoshiung City CO2 Action Plan and Kaoshiung City-Vancounver, B.C. CO2 partnership, aimed towards lowering Taiwan's CO2 emissions.
Taiwan is a major center for electronics manufacturing and development. Major environmental problems resulting from the toxic materials used in electronics manufacturing has had major impacts on the health of local residents as well as the island's environmental sustainability. In the past TEAN has led successful campaigns against RCA and Formosa Plastics for illegal toxic waste dumping. In addition TEAN has worked closely with foreign NGOs such as Silicon Valley Toxics Coaltion, International Campaign for Responsible Technology, as well as local environmental groups to bring awareness as well as to demand action from the government and private sector.
