The Situation of Environmental Education in Indonesia

EE activities in Indonesia have started since the middle of 1960s. There are two major EE streams: the first is nature conservation education by the government and the second is nature-loving activities arisen from universities around the country. For formal education, Boy/Girl scout activities and nature conservation education are introduced to lower grades of elementary schools. As for NGOs, there are many NGOs actively working in EE field since late 1970s. In 1996, EE NGOs network, JPL(Environmental Education Network), was established and more than 150 organizations are now participating in this network. EE by private corporations as social responsibility has also been becoming active. Originally, it took a form of foreign corporations' support for NGOs, but recently collaborations with local corporations and NGOs have been initiated.
