The situation of environmental education in Thailand

Environmental education in Thailand has been integrated into both formal and non-formal education programs since 1977. A significant development on EE in Thailand was started in early 1990s when an action program on EE was developed by the Ministry of Education, setting a target of 60% of students and the public to be aware of environmental conservation by 1996. The Agenda 21 recommendations from the Rio Conference are also reflected in the formulation of the objectives in the 1999 Revision of National Education Act. The management, conservation and sustainable use of natural resources is highlighted as a key area for integration into core subjects.

Although environmental education has been integrated into both formal and non-formal education programs since late 1970s, the EE activities are limited to science teachers only. The concept of crosscutting curricula is still a limited practice. The content of EE is generally oriented towards conservation without linking the natural science aspects with social and socio-economic dimensions. At present, Thailand is lacking of an integrated, ready-to-use environmental learning source specifically to support teachers and students. Moreover, materials on EE for teachers are scared and not easily accessible.

Environmental education is regarded in relation to the various environmental goals highlighted in the plan of many governmental agencies as well as non-governmental agencies. Many organizations are involved in educating people in several environmental aspects, in recognition of the fact that basic environmental knowledge gives youth a better understanding of environmental problems and sustainable development. The governmental agencies involve with EE in Thailand are the Office of the Basic Education Commission (www.obec.go.th), Department of Environmental Quality Promotion (www.deqp.go.th), Energy Policy and Planning office of the Ministry of Energy (www.eppo.go.th).  In addition to the governmental agencies, the prominent NGOs and private companies have also played an important role in supporting EE in Thailand.
